HELLO CHARLOTTE
HUGE WARNING: Hello Charlotte is an extremely triggering game. Its concept as a whole is of dereality and suicide. This page discusses
everything within this game and contains images of gore, body horror, blood, and more. The creator of this shrine (and the creator of the game for that matter) does not defend nor condone some of the themes present in this series. For a more comprehensive trigger warning list, please refer to DoesTheDogDie or other posts that may contain a more exhaustive list.
Every page aside from this main home page contains in depth spoilers. Please play the games for yourself if at all interested before reading my ramblings...!
Huge thanks and credit to
Diluculo and
Gothiclolita for inspiring a lot of this shrine with their own HC shrines!
Hello Charlotte is a visual novel/RPG hybrid psychological and surrealist thriller game series created by indie developer and artist based in Estonia, etherane also known as ane. The first game was released June 17th, 2015. since the first game's release, there have been three main game episodes, two spinoff games and an upcoming spinoff for 2023 titled "Rehab Friday ~with Henry Huxley~".
I initially discovered Hello Charlotte some time around 2018. However, I actually didn't play it until October 2020. The reason I actually knew about it was because Charlotte Wiltshire was my faceclaim on my 2018 roleplay blog. I even have some of the icons I edited to prove it still. So for around 2 years, I was aware of Hello Charlotte, but had never actually played it or saw anything other than the countless CGs I looked at to make roleplay icons. In October 2020, I was on an RPG Maker Game kick. I was playing a ton of Yume Nikki fangames and free RPG Maker horror games especially. It was around this time, that I rediscovered Hello Charlotte; likely on some list of "good free RPG Maker games to play". Needless to say, my life was changed. I was immediately interested the moment I opened Episode One and read that first few lines about dreaming. A Yume Nikki fan discovering Hello Charlotte and immediately loving it is not that rare of a thing but let me tell you I love dream motifs and I was hooked.
I finished Episode One in a day. I only started streaming it to my friends halfway through, just when I was leaving the library area. I immediately wanted more. I was enamored by the surrealism and the artwork. The music (although royalty free) created an atmosphere that I became obsessed with. Although Episode One is rare in its seriousness, I still felt a deep connection to it even during that messy first episode. I was gifted Episode Two and Episode Three by a kind friend a few days after finishing Episode One. Although it sounds absolutely cheesy, my life was genuinely truly changed when I finished this game. A piece of media had never made me feel so seen and represented.
JUNK FOOD, GODS, AND TEDDY BEARS
Hello Charlotte EP1: Junk Food, Gods, and Teddy Bears was released June 17, 2015. Although it uses default RPG Maker assets and has a sort of clunky story, Episode One holds a very special place in my heart. Well, obviously...it was the first game of the series so I really do love it. Despite hindsight and knowing how much better it gets, I never get over that charm that the first game deploys. A surrealist story that sets up the future installments beautifully. Playing after finishing the others, it's always so fun to notice some set up for future plot points and some foreshadowing!! I also adore Charlotte in this game. She is so optimistic despite the world she is in and it's a beautiful juxtaposition to the second episode. Despite half of this game being useless puzzles and trying to keep Felix alive, I love it. I love the Pythias, I love the House, I love Charlotte. My honest to god favorite part of this game has to be that beginning monologue. It means so much to me and was the moment I knew I was going to love this game.
My world met its end a long time ago. / The humanity as I knew it ceased to exist and disappeared without a single trace. / The gods they believed in have died, and churches were built as their graves. / The chaos turned to order and it finally became quiet. / All I can do is dream, for I am so, so tired. / Before I abandon the world that forms noise in my head, will you be so kind as to join me in dream-seeing?
The worldbuilding in this episode is astonishing for what it is. A small peak into what is to come. Honestly, I love Episode One for the way that it truly does open up a world of questions and answers to this universe that Ane has created. Something else I really love about Episode One is the humor. The random bits of bringing up dismemberment and other crude jokes. It rarely comes off as actually edgy. The fourth wall breaking is another point I really enjoyed. There were a few times I found it sort of cheesy (especially the end with t
